Guide: Adding Catalog Item
From PlantX.net
This guide demonstrates how to add new catalog items to Inventory.
Start by opening the Inventory window. Select the Inventory button
from the toolbar.
1. Select the Add Catalog Item
button to the right of the catalog tree view.
- The Select Material dialog appears.
2. Select the Plant Material to add to the catalog and click OK.
- Use the Search Name filter to narrow the list and speed selection.
- If you do not find the right material, it is likely that it has not been added to your material library. Use the New option to start the addition of a new material.
3. The catalog tree view now shows the added material with <No Attributes> highlighted. Select the Attributes tab in the detail tabs on the right half of the Inventory window.
4. Use the plant attributes in the Root, Grade, Form and Grown tabs to describe the newly added catalog item.
- Start by using the minimum details necessary to describe a set of plants. You can always return later to fully describe plants.
- There are two schools of thought when it comes to defining catalog items. The first approach to cataloging your inventory is to select only the bare minimum to describe the plants. This keeps the amount of information that prints on the various business forms to a minimum. The other opposite approach is to include as many attributes as possible to better describe your plant to your customer. It may come down to your target audience. If your customers are more retail in nature, you may want to educate your customer and require more of a sales touch to your catalog by including more details. If you are strictly wholesale, you will likely stick to the minimum details necessary to describe or differentiate one row of material from another.
5. Click the Apply button to update the catalog item attributes.
- The description of the plant in the catalog tree view will update.
- Faster Entry
Use the Copy Catalog Item feature to speed up first time catalog entry. Instead of looking up the Material each time you enter a catalog item, just add one material type and then copy it for each new catalog item.
- Highlight an existing catalog item
- Press the Copy Catalog Item button
- Change the attributes for the newly added catalog item to distinguish it from the copied catalog item
